Our History
Excelsior Academic College was established in 2008 by Ms H.A. Derrett, the principal of the College and an active full-time teacher. Passionate about education and changing the lives of people through education, Ms Derrett opened the College with the vision of creating an environment for any age, culture and background to give students a chance to change their lives through education.

After completing a Bachelors in Science,
followed by both an Honours and Masters in Physics, I completed my PGCE. I have
taught at various schools and universities around Gauteng which led to my
desire to create a place where each and every student is given a chance to
achieve a world-class education at a school offering an internationally
recognised education system. It was with this in mind that I established the
College.
I strive to see every student unlock their full
potential by creating an open and supportive atmosphere which encourages our
students to develop on both academic and personal levels. The combination of
our extremely passionate staff, small classes, and a safe environment helps
every student realise their full potential. I encourage and help each student
based on their specific learning style and will always make them feel like they
can reach their goals.

Cambridge Education
Cambridge Pathway students have the chance to acquire the knowledge and skills they need to achieve at school, university and beyond. The five stages lead seamlessly from primary to secondary and pre-university years. Each stage – Cambridge Early Years, Cambridge Primary, Cambridge Lower Secondary, Cambridge Upper Secondary and Cambridge Advanced – builds on the learners’ development from the previous one. Our curriculum reflects the latest thinking in each subject area, drawn from expert international research and consultation with schools.
Knowledge, understanding and higher order
thinking skills
Cambridge programmes combine an emphasis on
mastering subjects in depth with the development skills for study and work in
the future. We value deep subject knowledge as well as the conceptual
understanding that helps students make links between different aspects of a
subject. We also encourage students to develop higher order thinking skills -
problem solving, critical thinking, independent research, collaboration and
presenting arguments. These are transferable skills that will last a lifetime,
preparing students for their future lives. They also make learning enjoyable
and rewarding.
Where are Cambridge qualifications accepted?
Students can be confident that their Cambridge IGCSE and Cambridge International AS & A Level qualifications are accepted as equivalent to UK GCSE and AS & A Levels by leading universities worldwide. An independent study by UK NARIC, the national agency in the UK for the recognition and comparison of international qualifications and skills, has found the qualifications to be comparable to UK GCSE and AS & A Level.
